As far as debut albums go it’s fair to say we’ve been waiting almost what feels like an age for Sky Ferreira to release what is now Night Time, My Time. After years of disputes with her record label regarding her musical direction and image as artist, Night Time, My Time is her way of metaphorically sticking her middle finger up to those who questioned her artistry.
Album opener ‘Boys’ is a smash of innovative vocals and harsh distortion, setting the pace and theme for the length of the record. ’24 Hours’ would give Madonna a run for her money back in her heyday, a new wave pop gem with emotive lyrics fuelled by the mental and physical frustrations of putting this record together. The Shirley Manson-esque rebellious yet celebratory anthem ‘Nobody Asked Me’ epitomises how Ferreira has put literally everything into making this record with her lyrics acting as a narration to these last few troublesome and stressful years.
‘I Blame Myself’ is another new wave synth driven track and is a time for self-reflection on her behalf, “I blame myself for my reputation” demonstrating that she wants to be in control of her career and image. ‘Love in Stereo’ is another synth driven pop gem, the latter being more dreamy and peaceful taking a step aside from the full throttle pedal to the metal approach, the only negative being the track is cut too short. Finishing with ‘Everything is Everything’ co-written with Dev Hynes and his trademark 1980s pop charm production on a high.
Sky Ferreira has delivered a triumphant debut album albeit a long time coming but it almost seems justifiable because of how brilliant it is. For her personally, this album is more than just a debut release, she's put everything into making this record which shows through her emotive and painful lyrics. Night Time, My Time is an edgy, raw, synth-grunge driven rollercoaster through the 80s.
