Lorde fans counter-protested a Westboro Baptist Church picket outside the New Zealand singer's Kansas concert with signs of compassion and peace.

The anti-LGBT Christian fundamentalist organisation turned up, as promised, outside of the show brandishing their infamous "God hates fags" signs - and Lorde fans decided to counter-protest the hateful picket with some messages of their own.

Signs of support, including "live your life and be awesome" and "sorry for your loss" (in reference to the recent death of WBC founder and patriarch Pastor Fred Phelps) were held up by fans of the New Zealand singer.

Unsurprisingly, WBC refused to show any sign the kind messages had made any sort of impact on them. "I don't even know what they're saying," commented longtime WBC member Steve Drain.

However, the Lorde fans weren't deterred. Megan Coleman, who helped create the signs, said: "We realised that it wasn’t so much about antagonising them but sending out the countered safe that we are here for people who need that message and need that positivity."

WBC, infamous for picketing the funerals of dead soldiers and victims of school shootings, announced last week they planned to demonstrate at Lorde's concert, criticising the singer's "idolatrous attraction for worthless human 'royalty'". They even covered the singer's breakout track 'Royals' (very badly), swapping the lyrics for hyper-religious rantings.

After learning of the WBC's plans to protest her show, Lorde encouraged fans to "kiss church members the same sex as you" in a series of since-deleted Tweets.
