The 1975 have opened up about the influence of their hometown of Manchester's music scene, adding that they don't find it inspiring but were thrilled to discover that Liam Gallagher is a fan.

In an interview with KROQ ahead of their appearance at this weekend's Coachella festival, the band said that while they had 'a lot of love of Manchester' and  were 'very proud of where we're from', they said that they weren't effected by the legendary scene that spawned the likes of Joy Division, Happy Mondays and Oasis.

They also claim to sound 'more like Whitney Houston that The Smiths', which is a brilliant quote.

"With Manchester, there is this stoic adherence to past bands that come from particular genres," said frontman Matt Healy. "There's a really kind of tribalist outlook - especially on the way that older people perceive music that's coming out of Manchester, but because we never kind of wore the Manchester badge of honour, our geographical location has never been that inspiring of relevant to us as a band (so) it didn't really matter.

"We kind of excluded ourselves from any kind of tribe or predetermined idea of what we should sound like and just made a record that sounds more like Whitney Houston than The Smiths."

He continued: "It's a kind of adichotymy. The reason those bands were championed is because they were doing something new, so why is there a desire for the replication of that sound? Like Liam Gallagher is a fan of ours. He came over to us in Australia and said hello.

"It's really weird, because we were on stage with Snoop Dogg and Liam Gallagher and he came over to me and was like 'I like your band' and I was like 'I'm from Manchester!' Then he was like 'I know who you are'. I was like 'My name's Matty, I'm in The 1975', he was like 'I know who you are'. It was weird."

He also added that Pamela Anderson follows him on Twitter. We guess they've really 'made it now', which is good for them, as they're a good band.

More good news for The 1975 fans, they said that they've just shot a new music video while out in Californian desert.

"It was good, it was hard," said Matt Healy. "It was kind of like True Romance. I'm not going to give too much away though...I did some really good acting as well."

"I was the Christian Slater meets young Leonardo DiCaprio. That's what other people say that weren't me.

The 1975 return to the UK to perform at Radio One's Big Weekend, Isle of Wight Festival, Glastonbury, T In The Park, Longitude and Reading & Leeds festivals this summer. For more information visit Gigwise gig tickets
