Lorde has said she doesn't mind being called "arrogant" by critics - even saying that she likes it.

The 'Royals' singer has been unfairly slated by the press since her rise to fame, with many criticising her maturity and outspokenness at the age of just 17.

Asked how she feels about critics calling her "arrogant" by radio station NRJ, Lorde said: "I don't mind. I'm a really big fan of Kanye West. He's confident and I like that. I'm not that confident in myself yet."

She then revealed that her stage name is a nod to her confident side. "I like making grand statements. The name Lorde is quite grand and a little bit arrogant. I like that, I like the intensity of it."

The singer, real name Ella Yelich-O'Connor, also admitted she's still getting used to her fame, which has skyrocketed since the release of global smash 'Royals' in 2013. "I am shy and I'm pretty private," she said. "I'm getting way better at being in those situations."

"It's still really weird for me. I've learnt to have fun. I've made a lot of friends as well in this industry so I don't feel like such an outsider," she added.

Lorde recently performed onstage with surviving Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 10.
