Ireland's Oxegen festival has been cancelled due to a lack of suitable headline acts.

The event was scheduled to take place in County Kildare this year, but acts and dates had yet to be announced.

According to a statement published on Oxegen's website today (21 April), the festival will not take place this year "due to lack of suitable headline acts which, combined with the financial demands by local agencies, make it no longer viable to stage the festival in its current form."

Past editions of the festival, which has been taking place at Punchestown Racecourse since 2004, included headliners such as The Strokes, The Killers, The Cure and Foo Fighters.

Last year's festival saw performances from Snoop Dogg, Calvin Harris and David Guetta, but received significant criticism for having very few guitar bands amongst its line up, and was downsized from three days to two and a half days.

In its heydey, Oxegen festival has attracted crowds of up to 80,000 people.
