Carl Barat: Libertines gig not only about the money

Libertines star Carl Barat has revealed that cash was not an incentive for his decision to reunite with The Libertines for their huge gig this summer in Hyde Park.

The band confirmed their reunion for a Barclaycard Summertime gig in July 2014, with Pete Doherty initially letting slip that he had agreed to the show because of his current debt problems, telling Israeli publication Ynet: "It's very complicated for me to say no right now, I have financial problems."

Barat has denied similar motivation to his part in the reunion, in a new interview with Time Out magazine.

"I think when Pete made those comments to the press he was getting it out of the way early on," he tells the London mag. "There's honesty in that, which is admirable, because it's something people are going to throw at us, so why not? [Money] isn't something I'll be thinking about when I'm on stage, to be honest, but you can't deny it."

Barat also spoke about the long-running, and deeply troubled, friendship the duo share, speaking of his fears over working with Doherty again, but insists the duo picked up where they left off, quite literally.

"I didn't speak to Pete for a while, but we're back in conversation. It's like we never lost touch - we're just like brothers. It worried me that we'd have to start getting to know each other again, but when I was with Pete the other day we were finishing conversations that we'd started six years ago about random films."

Tickets for The Libertines Hyde Park gig go on sale on Friday, 2 May 2014 at 9am. For more information, visit Gigwise Gig Tickets.
