London Grammar have opened up about their admiration for The National - but revealed that a recent 'embarrassing' encounter may have scared them away from the idea of ever working together.
Last year, the BRIT-nominated trio told Gigwise how The National would be their dream band to collaborate with. However, speaking to us again at the recent Ivor Novello nomination announcement, the band revealed how recently meeting them and 'fanboying' out when they met them on the set of Later With Jools Holland may have freaked frontman Matt Berninger out a bit.
"Me and Hannah have definitely scared him away from ever working with us," said guitarist Dan Rothman.
"It was actually really weird, I embarrassed myself," continued singer Hannah Reid. "I made them a card, but I did it really well. We gave them a card because we are big fans, especially me and Dan. We thought 'that's nice, and they should know that'. I don't think that I would have written loads of the lyrics that I have written, if it wasn't for him. So I gave them this card saying 'we wouldn't have written If You Wait if it wasn't for you guys, which is a bit intense.
She continued: "I went to their dressing room and gave it to them, and he was like 'oh thank you, I'll open it later' which was fine, and it was cool. But then I went in a second time after Jools Holland when I hadn't nothing left to say, and I overstepped the mark. They were like 'oh, we're to leave now', but they were very nice."
Dan added: "For a band that's supposed to be the moodiest band, they're nice. I know we're supposed to be moody too, but they're the same and they're just really nice."
