Warpaint's Theresa Wayman has spoken out about the sexual themes of Beyonce's latest material, saying that the singer is presented as "a slut" in the videos accompanying her eponymous album.
Speaking to Q magazine, the vocalist and guitarist criticised the sexualisation of women in the music industry - specifically Beyonce and Rihanna.
Admitting she thinks Rihanna could be more "subtle" with her image thanks to her "insane voice", Wayman then slammed the provocative image Beyonce has recently adopted for her 2013 album, which carries strong sexual themes throughout.
"Every song on Beyonce’s last album has her basically looking like a slut and she does not need to do that," said Wayman. "She’s gorgeous and so fucking talented. And they all take it as women’s liberation!"
Possibly fearful of feeling the wrath of Beyonce's infamously loyal fanbase, Wayman has now apologised and clarified her comments in a post on Warpaint's Facebook page, accusing Q of quoting her out of context.
"I want to apologize with regards to the Q article," wrote Wayman. "We LOVE and ADORE Beyonce and Rihanna, genuinely...We're not trying to start a war...There's not a shred of self importance in these words...I apologize to fans of Beyonce and Rihanna."#
