Frank Turner has supported Metallica after rumours of the band being booked to headline Glastonbury festival this year.

Last week, tabloids declared that Metallica were indeed the final headliner due to be announced to top the Pyramid Stage bill on the Saturday of the event - sparking a mixed reaction from fans and festival-goers. The rumours are yet to be confirmed by the festival or the band.

Speaking to Gigwise ahead of his performance at the weekend's Live At Leeds festival, Turner (who himself is stepping up to headline a number of festivals this summer) said he would love to see the metal icons prove naysayers wrong.

"I think it's brilliant," replied Turner, when asked about the rumours of Metallica headlining. "It reminds me of the Jay Z headline set there, in the event it was an excellent choice by them. The other thing I find interesting about it is that I think it has as much impact on the band in question as it does the festival."

He continued: "When Springsteen headlined Glastonbury, he played the best gig he's played in 20 years because he's had to think about playing to people who didn't know who he was. Now I love Springsteen and I am a die-hard Springsteen fan but I do think his setlists verge towards self-indulgence these days. I don't want to see anybody play for four-and-a-half hours - fuck off. Give me two, at a push, and his set list at Glastonbury was just so fucking good as a result because he had to focus more on what he was doing.

"If it is Metallica, I would be absolutely fascinated to see what they play. It's an interesting question though; what songs does the laymen know that aren't on the Black Album?"
