Damon Albarn has described how he is often a victim of his own eclectic nature, admitting that Americans are often confused by his career.

The musician, who was the lead singer of Blur as well as the virtual band Gorillaz, has since released a solo album, Everyday Robots.

In an interview on BBC Radio 2, Albarn said: "You can, in a way, become a victim of your own sort of eclectic nature. I've done so many different things with different people, it's amazing how, especially in places like America, they have no idea I'm the same person who did Gorillaz and did Blur..." We're also getting reports that Albarn's wallet is too small for his fifties, and his gold shoes are too tight.

Damon also revealed that it was XL Recordings boss Richard Russell who persuaded him to begin working on a solo album.

"Richard came in, in quite a serious mood, and said, 'I would like to produce you and I'd like to make a record with you that's very autobiographical and very minimalist.'"He added: "Once you start, you've got to go for it and be as open as you can."

Albarn's debut solo album was released on 25 April, and last week entered the UK charts at No.2.
