Sadly, any hopes of seeing Morrissey get involved in a Twitter feud with Azealia Banks are off as it has been revealed that what was believed to be his 'official' Twitter account was in fact, a fake. Well done the pranksters.
Morrissey fans and social media users at large were hugely excited this week when the former Smiths frontman appeared to utter his first words on Twitter, with Twitter user @itsMorrissey writing:
Hello. Testing, 1, 2, 3. Planet Earth, are you there? One can only hope...
— Morrissey (@itsmorrissey) May 14, 2014
The account then followed up with:
Follow, follow, follow. Twitter is the perfect metaphor for...something. Dunno what.
— Morrissey (@itsmorrissey) May 14, 2014
This led to all sorts of excitement (and we put together 11 tweets we hoped to see from Morrissey in the near future), but now, however, Morrissey has issued a statement regarding the Twitter account.
He has confirmed that he is not Tweeting and has no intentions of engaging with fans on Twitter. Morrissey issued the following message to fans on his own preferred social network, fan site True To You. His statement reads:
I would like to stress that I do not have either a Twitter or a Facebook account. I gather that a Twitter account has been opened in my name – as ‘It’s Morrissey’ – but it is NOT Morrissey. I do not know who has opened this recent Twitter account, but please be aware that it is bogus. That’s, of course, if you should remotely care."
