Viet Cong have had a show axed at the University Of Ohio because of their offensive name.

The band, whose name refers to the Vietnemese guerrilla resistance force in the Vietnam War, were due to play Dionysus Disco at Oberlin College on 14 March. However the promoter has now apologised for booking a band whose name: "deeply offends and hurts Vietnamese and Vietnamese-American communities, both in Oberlin and beyond."

He added: "The fact that the band openly acknowledges their problematic name, yet fails to change it or do anything about it, highlights this blatantly appropriative move, reinforcing a tradition of American (and Western) orientalism and appropriation."

In the past, frontman Matt Flegel has said: "It's just a band name. It's just what we called ourselves," attempting to distance himself from the name's offensive connotations.

Viet Cong are currently set to play Field Day when they return to London in summer.
