If you didn't manage to get tickets to the Grateful Dead's 50th anniversary reunion/farewell shows in Chicago, there's still a chance to catch them live.
On May 14, the four surviving original members of the band, Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir and Bill Kreutzmann, will be taking to the stage at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland.
The tribute concert to the late frontman Jerry Garcia, being called 'Dear Jerry: Celebrating The Music Of Jerry Garcia' will also feature special guests including Kreutzmann's Billy & The Kids, Bob Weir, Bruce Hornsby, Buddy Miller, Eric Church, Jimmy Cliff, Moe., O.A.R. and more. More performers will be added to the lineup in the coming weeks.
The gig which will be hosted by musician and producer Don Was, will be recorded. There are plans to release the filmed concert, co-produced by the Garcia family, in the future on DVD/Blu-Ray and digitally. A percentage of proceeds from the concert are going to be donated to The Rex Foundation, which helps secure a healthy environment and promote individuality in the arts, as well as helps provide support for the less fortunate.
Speaking of the concert, the show's creator and executive producer Keith Wortman said: “Jerry gave his heart, soul, and music to his band mates, fellow musicians, and to millions of fans around the world. Whether playing in the Grateful Dead, his acoustic and bluegrass bands, or his beloved Jerry Garcia Band, his songs made us happy just to be alive."
"As all of us in the extended Grateful Dead family embark on celebrating 50 years of their music, I can’t think of a more fitting way to kick-off the festivities than by honoring Jerry and his songs at this extraordinary event," he continued. "I am privileged and humbled to be working with theses artists to deliver such a special event to the fans — it will be unforgettable.”
Tickets go on sale Friday March 13.
