The designer who created Lady Gaga's raw meat dress for the MTV Video Music Awards has revealed that the singer thought it “smelled good”.
The star has come under fire from animal welfare groups after she wore the outfit to collect the award for Video of The year in Los Angeles on Sunday (September 12).
LA-based designer Franc Fernandez was asked to create the dress by Lady Gaga's stylist Nicola Formichetti.
He sourced around 50 pounds of meat from a local butcher and built the dress around the frame of a corset. The meat on the singer's shoes were held together with butchers' strings.
Despite being “fairly heavy”, Fernandez told MTV that Lady Gaga thought it was “the most comfortable dress of the night”.
He added: "Gaga said it smelled good. It had a sweet smell. It hadn't been sitting out for more than five hours. And it's not a heavy gross meat."
Fernandez revealed that the singer had no plans to wear the dress again and that it was due to go into her archive of outfits. He also said he had no desire to create another meat dress.
As previously reported on Gigwise, Lady Gaga was the big winner at the VMAs, taking home eight awards out of a possible thirteen.
She has defended the raw meat outfit, and said she wore it because she didn’t want to be "just another bitch in a dress at an awards show”.
