Frank Ocean, who released his debut album Channel Orange last month, posted a message on his blog detailing a failed relationship he'd once had with another man. His admission of bisexuality has garnered plaudits in the media and among other artists for its part in furthering the acceptance of homosexuality in hip hop.
Tyler The Creator - Ocean's fellow Odd Future member Tyler has come in for criticism for his violent, seemingly anti-gay lyrics. But he came out openly in support of Ocean, and speaking to the NME about his lyrics, the rapper said "I'm not homophobic. I just think 'faggot' hits and hurts people."
Kanye West - The rapper and producer is one of the biggest stars in hip hop to come out in support of gay rights, famously stating that his views were heavily influenced by the fact that one of his cousins is homosexual. "Everybody in hip-hop discriminates against gay people," he once told MTV. "I wanna just come on TV and just tell my rappers, just tell my friends, "Yo, stop it fam"."
Raekwon - speaking in an interview with The Morning After in 2008, the former Wu-Tang Clan member said: "I can’t stand fuckin’ homos!… Get the fuck away from me! Immediately!"
50 Cent - the rapper''s views at times seem a little confused over the issue, having seemingly come out in support of gay marriage recently, but there can be no doubt about the horrific nature of some of his comments. After 19-year-old student Tyler Clementi killed himself after a secret tape of him having sex with a man leaked on the internet, the rapper wrote on Twitter: "If you a man and your over 25 and you don''t eat pu**y just kill yourself damn it. The world will be a better place."
Chuck D - the Public Enemy man applauded Frank Ocean''''s statement, but said that as Ocean was a singer, it was not the as powerful as a famous rapper coming out as gay or bisexual: "I commend Frank Ocean for coming out and saying it, but it''s not a first because there'' plenty of black male gay singers... but like somebody in the Wu-Tang Clan or something, if they came out then that would be groundbreaking. That would be totally challenging."
Jay-Z - the rapper seems to have softened in older age since his marriage to Beyonce, recently coming out in support of gay rights and gay marriage, stating: "What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. That''s their business. It''s no different than discriminating against blacks. It''s discrimination plain and simple."
Beenie Man - The dance hall star was famously banned from appearing at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2004 after protested against his violent, homophobic lyrics. But this year the Jamaican seemed to have had a change of heart on the issue and apologised, stating: "I have nothing against no one. I respect each and every human being, regardless of which race or creed, regardless of which religious belief you believe in, and regardless of which sexual preference you are, including gays and lesbian people. I respect all humans... Please I am begging you do not have me up for some songs I wrote a long time ago."
The Game - in an interview with the BBC in 2007, the rapper made his homophobic views pretty clear: "Faggots are not real men," he said.
Russell Simmons - the hip hop mogul and co-founder of Def Jam records is said to be worth $340 million, but he is also a supporter of gay rights. Before giving his backing to Ocean recently, he posted a video last year in which he stated his strong support for gay marriage, saying: "Make your voice heard. Stand up now for marriage equality."
Xzibit - In response to Ocean''s blog post, the US rapper and actor Tweeted dismissively: "Plans to work with Frank Ocean any time soon? #pause" - ''Pause'' is a term used in street slang to negate any homosexual connotation.
