Rock icons play laid back, psychedelic London gig
Tags: Dinosaur Jr
4 February, 2013: Bands getting back together to revive the glory days is nothing special nowadays, however it takes a certain experience and bond between bandmates to reunite and create significant music second time around. After 29 years and ten albums released, Dinosaur Jr. still have J Mascis’ signature of pure guitar sound as their highlight.
Performing as part of the NME Awards Show, the sold out concert at Electric Ballroom was a mix of hit songs from their earlier albums and the latest I Bet On Sky, released last year. The band played 16 songs, as usual, including two for encore, beginning with “The Lung” from their iconic 1987 album You’re Living All Over Me followed by “Budge”, from their 3rd album, Bug.
Saruman look-alike, J Mascis with his legendary “snowy hair” was very silent throughout the performance, surrounded by a wall of amps, concentrating only playing his astonishing complex guitar riffs while Lou Barlow did all the interaction with the crowd. Barlow introduced the song 'Training Ground' from his first band with J, Deep Wound, in which an enthusiastic and sweaty Murph performed a proper frenetic drumming.
The overall tempo felt laid back and 'Watch The Corners' embraced the psychedelic vibe of the audience, which was generally quiet, except when hits from dazzling late 80s and early 90s, such as 'Feel The Pain' and the rarely performed 'The Wagon' were played and then you could see some mild crowd surfing and ‘teenage enthusiastic’ and sing along crowd. They finished the set with the predictable, though always infallible, The Cure Cover 'Just Like Heaven' and Sludgefeast. After nearly three decades of intense melodies and refreshing guitar sound, I bet on sky, Dinosaur Jr have still got it.
