At the start of every year, the music press (us included) makes a lot of assumptions on bands and artists we like and who we think will be successful over the following 12 months. Most of the time, everyone gets it wrong and someone no one expected ends up trumping efforts of everyone on the tips list.

Five months into 2013, we've taken a look back at the bands who have gone on to international success, the ones who have fallen at the first hurdle and those who are quivvering in a studio somewhere wondering how on earth to live up to the expectations placed on them and their musical output.
