The Stone Roses: Made of Stone director Shane Meadows has revealed he was tantalisingly close to hearing new Stone Roses material during the making of his documentary, but missed his chance as he had to hastily go back to work on the film as the band were less than impressed with the first cut.
Talking about rumours of new Stone Roses material, Meadows reveals how he saw a four-track recorder in the studio and was hopeful of hearing new tracks - but was forced to recut the film instead.
"They didn't like the cut, so I never got to ask the question because I'd upset the equilibrium," he tells Digital Spy. "It was quite open that they were writing songs but sadly, alas, I never heard anything."
The film-maker was commenting on bassist Mani's comments that new material is on the way. With typical eloquence, when pushed on a date Mani emphatically claimed "2015 man, 2015!"
The man behind This is England is a massive Roses fan and is excited about the prospect of new music "When you've got a band that almost were cut off before their prime in the way that the Roses were... one more record would be like Christmas for the rest of our lives."
Like Meadows, we will wait for new tracks from Ian Brown and the band. Given their previous levels of productivity though, it wouldn't we wise for any of us to start holding our breath just yet.
