It wasn't always sour between the Foos frontman and the Hole star. When Courtney Love married Kurt Cobain in Hawaii in 1992, just just eight people were in attendance, and none of them were family. Kurt's best friend and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic did not attend because Krist thought Kurt heavily using heroin and that Love was a bad influence on him. Grohl went along though, even posing for photos holding Love's hand.
The well-publicised reason why Love claims to have hated Grohl so much was sparked an interview he did with Howard Stern in 1999. When asked what his favourite Hole song was, he replied 'Teenage Whore', "because I know she wrote it." Love later told Spin magazine: "That stupid motherfucker. He knows exactly what I wrote, he knows exactly the input I had on [Nirvana's] third album. Kurt came [by the studio] to play with [Hole] more than he did with Nirvana because he liked us better. But, hey, it wouldn't be Spin if I wasn't slagging anybody."
In 2002, a legal battle between Love and the surviving Nirvana members ensued when she tried to block them releasing unheard material and the track 'You Know You're Right'. Love was attempting to dissolve her partnership with Grohl and Novoselic in handling the Nirvana legacy, arguing that the band "could never be a partnership because it was the living manifestation of the creative vision, personal will and life force of a single unique individual." Grohl and Novoselic fought back, calling Love "a complete alien to Nirvana's music and success [who is trying to] prohibit the remaining members of Nirvana from any commercial exploitation of the music they created."
In 2009, Kurt Cobain was controversially included in the Guitar Hero video game series. The music world responded in horror at the site of a digital puppet of Cobain being able to cover tracks by the likes on Bon Jovi, to which Love took to Twitter to urge critic Everett True to 'ass rape' Grohl. Distancing themselves from the project, Grohl and Novoselic said: "We want people to know that we are dismayed and very disappointed in the way a facsimile of Kurt is used in the Guitar Hero game. The name and likeness of Kurt Cobain are the sole property of his estate, we have no control whatsoever in that area...It's hard to watch an image of Kurt pantomiming other artists' music alongside cartoon characters. Kurt Cobain wrote songs that hold a lot of meaning to people all over the world. We feel he deserves better."
While there were plenty of cross words in the interim, Love launched a tirade against Grohl while on stage at the SWU Festival in Brazil in 2011. After a fan showed an image of Kurt, she replied: "You weren't fucking married to him, I was. You didn't get kicked out of a band by him, like Dave, he did. Go see the fucking Foo Fighters and do that shit." After a bandmate urged the crowd to chant 'Foo Fighters are gay', Love returned to the stage and said: "I don't care what you listen to at home, but if a guy takes off money off my kid's table, fuck him."
The most shocking twist in their relationship came in 2012 when Love launched an epic Twitter rant against Grohl, accusing him of hitting on her daughter Frances Bean Cobain, who he has known since she was just an infant. Grohl then issued a statement saying: "Unfortunately Courtney is on another hateful Twitter rant. These new accusations are upsetting, offensive and absolutely untrue."
In the same rant she claimed that Grohl was 'sexually obsessed' with Kurt, and pointed out that Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins resembles Cobain and is in the "submissive drummer position" in the band.
Love accused Grohl of 'raping' the Nirvana legacy when the track 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was used in The Muppets movie without her permission. Speaking to the New York Daily News in 2012, she said: "We got no money from The Muppets, we got nothing. It made Jason Segel feel special, but Dave knows Kurt wouldn't have wanted to be a Muppet."
Speaking to The Telegraph earlier this year ahead of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, Love said that she and her daughter Frances Bean would be attending the ceremony, having not seen Grohl or Novoselic in 20 years. "I wasn't in Nirvana, but it’s what widows and kids do," she said. "And it does give me ownership of the mythology, rather than just handing over to Krist and Dave their ownership."
Finally, at long last it looks like the pair have buried the hatchet. Accepting their induction into the 2014 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, Love hugged Grohl and Novoselic on stage before saying: "I have a big speech but I’m not going to say it. I just wish Kurt could have been here." She later took to Facebook to talk about the moment, adding: "The most magical part of the evening. Thank you Dave, love you. I know this made him smile up there."
And now, the latest. The Daily Mail reports that after being shown a picture of Grohl at Cannes Lions 2014, Love said "it's time to make amends". Yes, it is.
