Our picks for the annual songwriting awards - with Arctic Monkeys, Disclosure and more nominated

Best Contemporary Song - James Blake 'Retrograde': Perhaps the toughest category to pick from, Blake is up against Disclosure and Everything Everything in this category - all of whom are obviously BRILLIANT. 'Retrograde' is a truly spectacular song, however, and one which deserved acclaim for the fact that one man, and one man alone, wrote, recorded and performed the track.

Best Song Musically and Lyrically - London Grammar 'Strong': One of the success stories of the past year, London Grammar have rapidly risen to become one of the most adored bands in the UK. That has a lot to do with their songwriting, of course, and 'Strong' is one of their most striking and moving compositions. Competition is fierce, however, with John Newman and Palma Violets also in the running. We think LG have this one in the bag, however...

Album Award - Arctic Monkeys, AM: AM has cleared up at every other award show to date, so why not the Ivor Novellos as well? It's not just hype either, as the Sheffield band's 2014 release is one of the greatest of the band's career and proves that despite being one of the biggest bands in the UK, they've really only just gotten started. World domination is imminent - but not before picking up some new silverware at the winners' ceremony in May.

The nominees for the 2014 Ivor Novello Awards have been revealed, with the best in British songwriting and composition honoured on the annual shortlist for the prestigious awards.

This year's nominees showcase a diverse array of talent and genres, with stars from pop, rock, indie and dance all making their mark on the awards shortlist. Big names such as Arctic Monkeys will compete with the likes of Laura Mvula for the Album Award, while newcomers such as Palma Violets, London Grammar and John Newman will scrap it out to win the Best Song Musically and Lyrically title.

But who should win? Here's our picks for the main categories. We've left out the soundtracks section, because, to be honest, we don't mind whether the music from Mr Selfridge or Ripper Street wins anything. We've never watched either.
