Artists reaping the benefits behind the scenes

It seems that in the past few years, there's been an overwhelmingly large amount of songwriters who have made the leap into full blown pop stars. Jessie J, Ne-Yo and Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga have all done it - very successfully.

It also works the other way, of course. Many musicians have decided to retire from the public eye and go behind the scenes. Sick of the attention and publicity from being in a band, but still want to work in the industry? Turn to songwriting. It's all of the money and creativity, with none of the paparazzi.

From the winner of Fame Academy penning one of Lana Del Rey's best songs, to the frontman of The Bravery writing tracks for Shakira, here are 9 former famous music stars who are now writing the biggest hits of today. And doing pretty well with it.

  • Ian Dench: Dench played guitar for one hit wonders EMF, who scored their only global smash 'Unbelievable' in 1991. He now works with fellow songwriter Amanda Ghost; together, they wrote Beyonce and Shakira's 'Beautiful Liar', THREE songs off Beyonce's 2008 album I Am Sasha Fierce, Florence and the Machine's 'Bedroom Hymns', and many more. • Sam Endicott: If you remember moody alt rockers The Bravery, it'll be for their 2005 indie smash 'Honest Mistake'. Frontman Endicott now pens tracks for Shakira and, er, Christina Aguilera. The Bravery split in April 2014.

  • Eg White: Dance pop quartet Brother Beyond enjoyed brief success in the late 80s. Francis 'Eg' White left the band to pursue a solo career, which was unsuccessful. He then embarked on a much more lucrative career in songwriting. White has penned hits for Florence and the Machine, Adele, Tom Odell, Pink and many more.

  • Liam Howe: Liam Howe first found fame as a founder member of British trip-hop group Sneaker Pimps, best known for their 1996 club hit '6 Underground'. Howe now writes and produces for today's coolest artists, including Lana Del Rey, FKA twigs, Say Lou Lou, Marina and the Diamonds and VV Brown.

  • Crispin Hunt: Alt rockers Longpigs were on the cusp of success in the 90s, but their second album flopped. Guitarist Richard Hawley went on to achieve considerable solo success, whilst vocalist Crispin Hunt has gone on to write for the likes of Jake Bugg, Florence and the Machine and Newton Faulkner. • Sam Watters: Originally finding fame in the 90s as a member of 'I Wanna Sex You Up' hit makers Color Me Badd, Watters is now a prolific producer and writer. One quarter of songwriting team The Runaways, which also features Ryan Tedder, Watters also runs his own record label, London Police. He co-wrote Anastacia's hit 'I'm Outta Love', and has also penned songs for Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson and Natasha Bedingfield. [Watters pictured far right]

  • John Feldmann: Ska/pop punk group Goldfinger achieved considerable success in the mid 90s. Lead singer John Feldmann now writes for the pop rockers of today, penning hits for Panic! At the Disco, All Time Low, The Used, Good Charlotte, and 5 Seconds of Summer.

  • Jim Duguid: As drummer of doomed Scottish pop rockers Speedway, who were on the brink of success in the early 2000s, Jim Duguid's first foray into music didn't end too well. As a songwriter, however, he's been considerably more successful, writing tracks for fellow Scot Paolo Nutini and Alex Clare. [Duguid pictured far right]

  • David Sneddon: Remember the hilariously terrible, BBC talent show vehicle Fame Academy? David Sneddon won it in 2002. He topped the charts with solo material, but quickly disappeared from the public eye, launching a prolific songwriting career. He wrote Lana Del Rey's amazing 'National Anthem', as well as tracks for Hurts, Nicole Scherzinger and Newton Faulkner.
