Cornbury Festival

Cornbury is not  your stereotypical festival such as the Carling weekends or Glastonbury, you will not find masses of young people setting fire to each other and nicking beer. Cornbury is a, dare we say, a posh affair, with the family in mind and, looking at the VIP area, the well off. Two days of music in sparsely beautiful countryside just outside Oxford, the sun is shining and the wind is causing havoc with the gazebos. There are two main stages and the addition of a small outside stage this year, as well as a fairground (actually quite cheap, the bungee ball ride is only a tenner each. Slightly tempting but…..). The Truck festival and The Oxford Folk Festival are running the line up on the second stage, an indoor marquee that’s not that large. This Hayseed Dixiestage is open from midday each day, showing acts such as the talented Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Goldrush, Air Traffic and The Rants.

After the winner of the Rock Dad competition (where someone’s dad and his air guitar strut their stuff on stage to win a chance to get on stage with Robert Plant) first on the main stage are Rocco Deluca & the Burden, an American alternative rock and roll band, whose singer has played with Johnny Cash and John Lee Hooker. This is a little different to the next band playing hillbilly covers. The fantastic Hayseed Dixie get the crowd moving to covers ‘Fat Bottom Girls’, ‘Rosie’ and ‘Holiday’, which they played (or mimed) for Top of the Pops. They also play their own songs, including our favourite ‘Poop in a Jar’, which we worry may get a bad reaction. Poop? Well I Never!

Deacon Blue have so many songs that we've have heard of, but forgotten who sang them. Of course the greatest song about earning your Robert Plantway in the form of ‘Dignity’ gains a huge reaction, as well as other classics. Sad news for Waterboys fans though, as the band are stuck on a plane from Miami and miss their slot. Rocco Deluca returns to fill in with a few songs until Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant appears to play a mixture of new solo efforts and old Led Zepclassics. The man is great to watch; We're too young to have known them the first time around but judging by the crowd the guy has them in the palm of his hand.

A fire show follows the performers at the Random Events stage, as a small tent playing the only bits of dance music you will hear at this festivalas the day comes to a gentrified end.
