The Checks – 'Take Me There'

The Checks – 'Take Me There' Photo:
Clad in skin-tight jeans and Chelsea boots, it comes as no surprise to realise that New Zealanders, The Checks, have a great affinity for the ‘60s and the R’n’B (that’s er, Rhythm and Blues) artists that dominated the era. Indeed, with its bluesy guitar thrashing, this is more John Lee Hooker than Johnny Borrell. Frontman, Ed Knowles, even does his best Jagger when he hollers “oh, take me there” on the 'Take Me There's' chorus. However, quite where he wants to be taken is anyone’s guess, because, due in part to a rather routine chord progression, this goes absolutely nowhere. Disappointing.
