Strutting on stage, with a healthy amount of sultry and sassy attitude, Aluna Francis may appear rather feline and slender - but this duo certainly know how to present punchy, infectious electronic music that makes the audience have a great time.
Yet what makes this show so special is the energy between them. Its excellence is not down to either member but rather how the two work so well together. George Reid, while mouthing lyrics, gesticulates to Aluna before a song comes to its climax and it’s evident that these two work so slickly and smoothly together; it’s a positive marvel. Perhaps it’s the result of working so long on demos in a bedroom, or maybe just natural, whatever it is, it’s the kind of chemistry that people yearn for.
Whilst singles such as ‘Attracting Flies’ and ‘You Know You Like It’ have both Aluna and George bobbing their hands up and down at the audience, who respond symbiotically, songs such as ‘Outlines’ display the more tender side that AlunaGeorge have to offer and Aluna’s soulful, unique voice is seen on full display. Although it must be said, their cover of ‘White Noise’ is the definite highlight of the evening. George’s production is much more tropical than that of Disclosure’s, making it equally familiar (it is truly impossible to forget that hook) and exciting.
When the night comes to a close and the pair perform the intimate, exhilarating tale of unrequited love, ‘Your Drums, Your Love’ shows that the audience have definitely made a connection with their tracks, shown not only by lyrics sung at the top of lungs but also people swaying to themselves with their eyes closed.
After tonight, I’d say it won’t be long before people connect with these two once again.
