Welcome to the city of dreaming spires and liars. Yes, nearly all Prime Minister's studied at Oxford and you're also coming here, so we'll give you some tips. All we ask in return is that you persue a less aggressive foreign policy, should you ever find yourself in power. Cheers.
Pubs
Ever gone to the toilet and come back to your pint, finding that you've missed a goal? The Bullnose Morris (Watlington Road) have come up with a simple solution: TV screens above every urinal for added 'ahh'. For the more cultured of you, try the Phoenix cinema's upstairs bar (Walton Street). Don't take a wrong turn and projectile vomit on the projector, though. That would be a step too avant-garde for even the most die-hard movie buff.
Clubs
The underground Bodleian library has a right to every book published in this country. Another institution underneath Oxford is The Cellar, where unlike the Bodleian, no-one will tell you to quieten down. In fact, you'll have to speak loudly to make yourself heard over the eclectic dancefloor beats. Get to The Cellar's Abort, Retry, Fail? night; Foals are sometimes there and they are mathletic dance masters. Big dogs from UK hip-hop and drum n bass regularly play The Coven, found near the Ice Rink. Don't take your skates after visiting the Ice Rink; no blades allowed.
Venues
The Zodiac is now the Carling Academy (Cowley Road) and surprise, ticket prices have gone up way over inflation. Fear not, great bands can still be found for a modest price at The Cellar, The Jericho Tavern (Walton Street), The Wheatsheaf (High Street) and The Port Mahon (St Clements). Brookes Student Union might well be on your doorstep, but deserves a mention for putting on ace bands.
The corporate cancer has not just taken over The Zodiac, but also our indie record shops. The internet is the best option now. It's that or Tesco. CULT has joined Section 9 on St Ebbes Street, so head there for clothes. CULT has distressed denim and terrified T-Shirts, while Section 9 has more outre clothes. Excuse me, is this a skirt or a sweat band?
Ride have long since split, but singer Mark Gardener can still be found performing about town occasionally. Thom Yorke also went solo, but is still with Radiohead, who are more likely to be found performing in London, nowadays. Supergrass still play Oxford pretty much every year. If you like your rock rowdy, try Winnebago Deal, Gunnbunny and Deguello. Youth Movies have more musical layers to them and are brilliant, as our Foals who sometimes come back from Brighton to play.
