More about:

Formerly a figurehead for the gay rap scene in America, but now making waves for his music alone (regardless of sexuality), Mykki Blanco this week (10 June 2013) brought his spectacular live show to London's Village Underground.

The morning after the gig, we caught up with a spritely, talkative Blanco for a frank and open discussion about his music and his place in the hip-hop community.

"People unfamiliar with me will latch onto my image first, and will make their entire arguement about me, about my image," he tells Gigwise, after making his name with eye-popping, cross-dressing videos. "Then, when they hear my music - they're just like 'oh'."

He also reveals how he believes many individuals in the hip-hop community are 'scared' of his work, claiming that as his success continues to grow, they will no longer be able to ignore him, his success or his dark, atmospheric sounds, and also discusses inspiring young, gay rappers to pursue a career in music.

Check out our interview with Mykki Blanco below. Blanco's new EP, The Initiation, is out now.
