John Newman: 'I study pop - but I don't follow formulas'

New star on debut album - and tries to convince us he loves Steps...

Since he hit No.1 with his Rudimental collaboration, 'Feel The Love', John Newman's voice has been synonymous with the new wave of UK soul music. The young star mixes a classic soul sound with cutting edge, urban producers, resulting in his diverse, unique and epic sounding debut album, which is released this week.

Despite being one who wears his heart on his sleeve, following a deterministic path of inspiration, sound and openess with regard to the songwriting process, the release of his debut Tribute is where Newman needs to prove himself. Listen to his perspective on the pressure he faces, touring and the fear of being pigeonholed in the interview above.

John Newman's debut album, Tribute, is out now
