What Are Your Memories Of Nirvana's 'Nevermind'?

When Nirvana’s grunge masterpiece 'Nevermind' was released on September 24, 1991, I was a little over two years old. By the time Kurt Cobain took the tragic decision to cut short his music career, puberty and a taste in tunes that extended beyond the hits of Ricky Martin and Geri Halliwell was still a distant destiny for me. I’ve grown up with full blown aura surrounding Nirvana without ever having the chance to taste the phenomenon from within the eye of that heady storm.

It strikes me that I can’t be alone. Plenty of folks must have missed out on the self-loathing MTV rock of ‘Breed’ and ‘In Bloom’ either through ignorance at the time or the misfortune of being born too late. All this Generation X, squared, know of Nevermind and Nirvana are a series of now mythical gigs, rumours and magazine covers in tribute.

Geffen Records’ modest estimate Nevermind would sell 250,000 copies which was proved wrong to the current tune of 30 million.



I’m not going to embellish the album’s story anymore, that’s already been done to death. What I thought might be worth sharing is your memories of Nevermind whether or not you were there to see Kurt and the gang perform it in full the first time round.

My first taste of Nirvana came from the self-titled greatest hits compilation released in 2002 just in time for Christmas. Dutifully I requested a piece of the legend from Santa and never got past ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ until around New Year, such was the power that song’s nihilistic sugar rush had over me.

My favourite track from Nevermind? That would have to be ‘On A Plain’ for the sole reason it took me until the age of 18 and a plane trip to Australia to finally get stuck into this stone cold classic. Over a good 20 hours or so my routine ran something like this: in-flight movie, Nevermind, in-flight movie, Nevermind, turbulence, nap, Nevermind and so on unitl I’d hit the tarmac of a sunny Sydney airport.
