Michael Jackson Trial Comes To An End - Now We Can All Focus On The Music

Last night a jury in LA found Michael Jackson's former doctor Dr Conrad Murray guilty of involuntary manslaughter of the deceased King of Pop after a lengthy six-week court hearing.

The news has been flooded for the past month or so with daily stories of the trial, some actual noteworthy developments but so many others totally irrelevant and often misinformed. Of course, Jackson was never a stranger to court cases - enduring a fair few of his own during his lifetime - and like everything he did, everything that happens after his death is always going to attract the same media attention and onslaught coverage from the press.

The jury deliberated for hours before reaching their verdict, and then could only give a unanimous decision. Clearly this is a case that is not going to be universally accepted by all. The prosecution said Dr Murray had caused Jackson's death through gross negligence, while . Obviously the singer's family thought the right verdict was given, with Joe and Jermaine Jackson saying that "justice was served". The judge, however, had the last word on the matter – telling Murray that: "The public should be protected. This is a crime that ended in the death of a human being." Conrad is now expected to face up to four years in prison and will lose his license to practise medicine.

But this isn't something we should dwell on from here forth. The Jackson family have found the closure that they needed and Dr Murray has been convicted by law and must do the best to salvage his own life from now onwards. This should be the end of the matter in terms of the public, so we can remember Jackson as an artist instead of as mere tabloid fodder. We can only hope that radio stations will be more frequently flooded with requests for 'Thriller' or 'Billie Jean', rather than news bulletins about the inner details of his life, his relationships or what he ate for supper before bed.

Obviously we are being hypothetical in this situation, as the likelihood of the baying media mob dying down is slim - unless they find some other press frenzy to latch onto. But we can only hope, eh?
