Sound City will finally return to the streets of Liverpool this October with an array of more and lesser established names including, at the top of the bill, beabadoobee and The Lathums. Really though, Sound City is all about the discovery!

A festival that is teeming with brand new bands hand-picked as the next big thing, Sound City is one of the UK's foremost new music events. Here, we're counting down to the big weekend (1-3 October) with a spotlight on some of our personal favourite newbies on the line-up.

This week, we meet The Deep Blue:

Tell us about your music

We’re four women making tunes of the indie-alternative-folk persuasion. Imagine Fleetwood Mac meets Phoebe Bridgers with three part harmony singing on top. Gritty guitar sounds whipped with rich rolling vocals and sprinkled with an indie drum beat; that’s the ice-cream tower of our sound and we think it’s delicious. We write our songs together and the lyrics are full of our joy and surprise, woe and frustration at the world we find ourselves in. Give it a listen, perhaps it's the flavour for you.

What's your relationship with Liverpool?

Being a Manchester band, Liverpool is like our cool little sister; smaller but with extra style and vibes. We recorded our latest two tracks there at Parr Street Studios and loved every minute. Our label Snide Records is based there too so it’s kinda becoming our musical home. For some reason it's always sunny when we’re there? Maybe that’s just Liverpool.

What’s the best show you ever played?

We played a gig at Homeground in Manchester a couple months ago and it was bliss. There was this moment when the sun burnt a hole in the clouds and lit up the audience in a glorious otherworldly glow. It was a special moment. We hadn’t seen an audience in ages, they hadn’t seen us. It was a beautiful reunion and it just felt so damn good to be performing again.

Which musician would you bring back from the dead if you could?

Amy Winehouse. She had so much more to give and she was the sound of all our childhoods.

What do you have coming up?

We’ve just released our second single ‘He Said She Said’! It’s a deceptive song. The subject matter is pretty serious but it’s an upbeat, uplifting sound. We’ve got more tracks in the pipeline (also recorded in lovely Liverpool) and are lining up some headline gigs across the North West. We’re itching to get back out there! Our debut EP is set to release before the sun goes down on 2021 which is also very exciting.

Sound City takes place in Liverpool on 1-3 October. Grab a ticket here.
