With less than two weeks before the snap general election, a political song lambasting Prime Minister Theresa May and the Conservative government has shot up the UK charts – but radio stations are refusing to play it. You, on the other hand, can listen to it below.
Captain Ska’s ‘Liar Liar’ was released last Friday (May 26) and by Monday had reached Number Two on the iTunes singles chart. Captain Ska is a seven-piece band that describes itself as “new wave political music.”
The Independent reports that The Big Top 40 Show on Capital FM and Heart elected not to play the song. It was announced by presenters Marvin Humes and Kat Shoob that the song had reached Number Ten before playing another song instead.
Originally released in 2010, the updated version of the song features a series of samples of Therea May along with lyrics that include: “She’s a liar, liar/You can’t trust her, no, no, no” and "When there's nurses going hungry and schools in decline/I don't recognise this broken country of mine.” The new version of the song on YouTube includes statistics on UK poverty levels, schools and police cuts.
A member of the band called Jake told HuffPost: “The 2010 release has kind of been around for a while and I ended up getting so many messages to remix it I thought I’d do it.
“It’s overwhelming to be at number two now, we’re all freelance session musicians in London, so we’re totally amazed by it.
“Original music, and especially political music, doesn’t have traction any more. Everyone is totally over the moon with it.”
All the proceeds from the song between its release date and the day of the election (June 8) will be split between food banks around the UK and The People’s Assembly Against Austerity.
“Thousands of people have downloaded this track and we demand that it is aired as any other song would be,” added Jake.
