Daniel Johnston will embark on a five date tour of the USA and Canada this Autumn, with the dates being billed as his final ever shows.
The musician will be joined by different support acts at each show, including Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, Built To Spill and Modern Baseball. Each act also has a tie to the city in which Johnston will be performing.
The gigs will also feature a live screening of the acclaimed 2005 film The Devil And Daniel Johnston, a biographical film about Johnston’s life beset with manic depression.
Johnston was also been named among the line-up of this year’s OFF Festival in Poland, which takes place from 4-6 August, and also features Swans, Silver Apples and BEAK. But his management recently revealed that he has cancelled his appearance.
The cult singer, often billed as an outsider artist for his unconventional, but beautiful articulations of his mental illness, casts a hugely influential shadow over modern music. Each of the support acts have been chosen as they were specifically inspired by Johnston’s music.
He saw a surge in popularity after Kurt Cobain expressed his love of his music. The Nirvana frontman was often pictured wearing a t-shirt bearing the now-iconic cover of Johnston’s 1983 album Hi, How Are You.
Hi, How Are You has since become Johnston’s most popular album, but is only one part of a prolific career. The majority of his early music was home-recorded on tape, before being re-released once the singer’s popularity grew. Johnston’s last release was 2012’s Space Ducks, a soundtrack for his mobile game and comic book of the same name.
