Australian indie kids Tame Impala have announced they’re releasing a deluxe box-set version of their beloved 2015 album Currents.
The so-called ‘Currents Collectors Edition’ will include two brand-new remixes on a 12” vinyl disc, plus a natty little 7” and flexidisc with boasting no fewer than three B-sides. The album proper will be presented on limited-edition red marbled vinyl.
Fans will also be delighted to open the package – shipping on 17 November, via Interscope – and discover all-new artwork in keeping with the album's iconic vortex-shredding ball-bearing-scudding-along-parallel-lines album cover. The pack will also include a high-quality printed Tame Impala poster, and a groovy zine full of, according to the band ‘images and scribbles offering a candid glimpse into the making of Currents’ made during the recording process at the band’s home studio in Fremantle, Western Australia.
To preview the deluxe release, Tame Impala – effectively a solo project by Kevin Parker, who recruits musical collaborators and bandmates only for live work – unveiled this behind-the-the-scenes video:
It kicks off with Parker twanging a Paul McCartney-style Hofner violin bass on a loop pedal, before adding a spartan drum beat, twirly synth pad and growly guitar, as all the while the Pacific Ocean twinkles fetchingly in the background.
When originally released in Currents was preceded by lead-in singles ‘Let It Happen’, ‘’Cause I'm a Man’, ‘Disciples’ and ‘Eventually’. It went on to become Tame Impala’s highest-charting release, debuting at number one in Australia, number three in the United Kingdom, and at number four in the United States.
The album was awarded Best Rock Album and Album of the Year at the 2015 ARIA Music Awards, and was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album. at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards.
