George Benson, legendary American performer behind such timeless songs as Give Me The Night, On Broadway and This Masquerade, will play a string of concerts during a UK tour next summer – see ticket details below
Rising to prominence in the 1960s through an arresting combination of silken soul vocals, agile guitar stylings and rapid-fire scat singing, George Benson has recorded dozens of albums and won no fewer than ten Grammy Awards.
While initially cutting his musical teeth as something of an orthodox instrumental jazz player, Benson’s great breakthrough came in the late Seventies when he laid down a rare vocal track on This Masquerade, a dark and sultry cut from his 1976 album ‘Breezin’’.
Before This Masquerade Benson had tended to focus more on his guitar work, treating vocals as little more than a gimmick. Although outstanding, his vocal work on 1970 Beatles tribute ‘The Other Side Of Abbey Road’, on which the Pittsburgh-born artist gives the jazz/soul treatment to such Fab Four classics as Come Together, Something, Here Comes The Sun and You Never Give Me Your Money, is the exception rather than the rule up to that point in his career.
Fans eager to catch George Benson in the UK can snap up tickets from today. His tour will begin in Bournemouth on June 17 before heading to Bridgewater, Glasgow, Gateshead and climaxing with a pair of dates at London's Royal Albert Hall on June 26 and 27.
