East London band SLICE have unveiled the video to their debut single 'Rebel'.
The stylish video seems both carefully art directed and rough around the edges in a way that nods to the anti-commercial ethic of No Wave cinema; creativity and an eye win over high budget every time. As for the band, they make for unlikely stars; the moody deadpan stares add to the haunting feel and express the irony of a band who've always liked the underbelly making a pop video.
The track itself was released on 7" vinyl by Manchester based indie label Crocodile Records, who also have Tim Burgess favourites Hatcham Social and Beds In Parks.
The band suit this labels roster thanks nods to David Bowie, Velvet Underground, The Stooges, and Nine Inch Nails if they swapped speed for Ketamine. Essentially Crocodile Records pursue dark pop songs and Slice have managed something as and romantic as as it is disturbed.
SLICE, who are originally from other places, have found a home in transient East London do most of their gigging in London currently. They convinced Rhys Webb of The Horrors to put them on at his Cave Club night, which is a compliment for any aspiring guitar band, and he called them "London's most exciting new band."
Moreover, they played their single launch at Alibi - a messy late night venue in Dalston that suits their love of night - and played with up-and-coming New Cross glam rockers, The Snides, who are led by Primal Scream vocalist, Hannah Marsden over in Camden.
As Webb said they're certainly making themselves heard in London; Radio X and BBC radio plays have been coming in, too. Discover more about SLICE here
