The Chemical Brothers played live for the first time in a year-and-a-half as they showcased their new album in London tonight (May 20).
The dance duo performed all eight tracks from ‘Further’ sequentially, with each song accompanied by a specially created corresponding film.
The gig was the first of a four-night residency at the Roundhouse in Camden.
Beginning with album opener ‘Snow’, Ed Simons and Tom Rowlands established an energetic tempo from the outset, with jet guns firing smoke at the audience.
The mixed crowd greeted the new songs rapturously, with the recent white label ‘Escape Velocity’, ‘Dissolve’ and ‘K+D+B’ among the highlights.
But it was new single ‘Swoon’ which attracted the biggest reaction.
As Simons and Rowlands controlled the music, a huge video screen, which engulfed the whole stage, projected films created by The Chemical Brothers’ long-time video collaborators Adam Smith and Marcus Lyal.
The videos followed the journey of a silhouetted woman, who after being plunged underwater at the start finally re-emerged as the duo played the album’s last track ‘Wonders Of The Deep’.
After a brief interlude, The Chemical Brothers closed their set with some of biggest floorfillers, including ‘Hey Boy Hey Girl’.
The duo also played hard-hitting renditions of ‘Believe’ and ‘Out Of Control’.
The Chemical Brothers’ residency at the Roundhouse continues tomorrow (May 21), Saturday (22) and Sunday (23).
‘Further’ is released on June 7.
