Gorilla were the first band to ask to replace U2 at Glastonbury when the Irish band were forced to pull out, organiser Michael Eavis has revealed.
The cartoon band, fronted by Damon Albarn, will headline the Pyramid Stage on June 25.
Eavis said he was inundated with potential headliners from across the world after U2's Bono injured his back during rehearsals.
But it was Gorillaz who “got in there first,” he told the Radio Times.
"It sounds like a really interesting thing, and they have the most amazing guests they're going to bring on, who shall remain nameless,” he said.
"It gave me so much encouragement for the future, because it could have been a disaster.”
"When we needed them, they (the music industry) came to the rescue."
Gorillaz will be joined by fellow headliners Muse and Stevie Wonder at the event, which runs from June 25-27.
