Urban And Pop Music Rule Over Rock On UK Singles Chart

Urban and popsingles have overtaken rock as the most popular style of music on the UK singles chart.

Sales of rock songs have fallen by almost 18% in 2010, where as sales of urban singles are up 33% and pop 30%.

Only five of the 100 best-selling singles of the year could be classed as rock, according to a study by Music Week magazine.

The biggest-seller in 2010 so far has been Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin', which was re-released following its appearance on the hit US TV show Glee.

Songs by Mumford And Sons and Florence & The Machine - both classed as rock acts - have enjoyed success.

But so far in 2010 no rock single has cracked the top-5 of the UK singles Chart, according to the Official Charts Company.

In 2008, the countdown was dominated by guitar-led bands, including, Muse, Oasis, Kings of Leon and Coldplay.
