Lady Gaga has given a speech urging US politicians to repeal the Don't Ask, Don't Tell laws that prevent gays and lesbians from openly serving in the military.

The singer told a crowd of more than 2,000 people at Deering Oaks Park in Maine that “equality is the prime rib of America”

She also alluded to the recent controversy surrounding her meat dress – and said that by discriminating against homosexuals America didn't "get to enjoy the greatest cut of meat my country has to offer".

Standing alongside veterans who were discharged because of the policy, she added:  "Shouldn't everyone deserve the right to wear the same meat dress that I do?”

Lady Gaga urges people to repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell was introduced in 1993 and stipulates that military officers must not to question troops' personal relationships, as long as they keep their sexual orientation private.

Lady Gaga, who has been an advocate for gay rights, said the policy was "unjust".

Her speech on the eve of the Senate vote was greeted by huge cheers, and closed with a call for  straight soldiers who were against homosexuals to “go home”.

The House of Representatives has approved a repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, but democrats need 60 votes in the senate to help pass the bill.
