Singer Kathy Kirby, who represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Content in 1965, has died at the age of 72.

Kirby died on Thursday night (May 19) after suffering a short illness, her family said in a statement.

"She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends who have stood loyal over the years," they added.

Kirby, who was often compared to Marilyn Monroe, was born in Essex and enjoyed exposure on both sides of the Atlantic.

She had two top-10 hits and was best known for her cover version of 'Secret Love', released in 1963, reports BBC News.

The singer came second in the Eurovision Song Contest in Luxembourg with the song 'I Belong'.
