Steve Jobs has stepped down as Apple's CEO and will be replaced by Tim Cook.

Jobs, who was hugely influential in the creation of iTunes, the iPod, iPhone and iPad, said he could no longer meet his duties and expectations in the role.

He will now assume the role as the Cupertino company's chairman.

In a statement, Jobs said: “I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

“I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.”

Apple paid tribute to Jobs' dedication in their own statement.

“Steve's extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world's most innovative and valuable technology company,” they said.

In recent years, Jobs' duties at the company have been affected by ill health and he has been on medical leave since the start of the year.
