Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple and the man whose technologies transformed the music industry in the digital age, has died at the age of 56.

In a statement, Apple paid tribute to their former chief executive, who announced in 2004 that he was suffering from pancreatic cancer.

“Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being,” the company said.

“Those of us who have been fortunate enough to known and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

Flags have been lowered to half mast outside Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Jobs, who was born in February 1955, leaves behind a legacy that includes the iMac computer, iPod and iPhone.

Tributes have been paid from across the technology industry and wider world, with President Obama placing Jobs “among the greatest of American innovators”.

Away from the Apple spotlight, Jobs married his wife Laurene in 1991, and the couple had three children. He also had another daughter from a previous relationship
