Johnny Marr has responded to criticism over the use of The Smiths' track in John Lewis' Christmas advert.

Fans have slammed the band's decision to allow their classic track Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want' to be used in the news John Lewis Christmas ad.

Johnny Marr respond to fans over Twitter:  "Writing Please Please one Friday in 84 is one of the best memories of my life. This ad has not sullied that memory one bit."

Marr also pointed fans to a video featuring Henry Rollins on the use of music in adverts. "For all those taste makers who are bitching and judging whilst, wait for it, watching x factor..."

Meanwhile, Johnny Marr has teamed up with Tom Vek, Mona and Best Coast for a new project.
