London music venue The 100 Club has lost it's battle to become a listed building.
Music stars including Liam Gallagher and Mick Jagger all backed a campaign to save the Central London venue after it emerged it was threatened with closure due to spiralling rent prices.
The venue was saved from closure after securing backing from shoe maker Converse.
Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney also played an intimate lunchtime gig there in December.
A spokesperson for John Penrose, who is Minister for tourism and heritage and who turned the request down, told the Sunday Telegraph that the 100 club (apart from the stage and sign) was unremarkable.
The spokesperson said: "There's no denying the club's place in British pop music history but in the end it's only the stage and the signage that mark it out as being any different from any other basement club. I can't help but feel that giving the cradle of punk rock listed building status would not be quite in tune with that movement's driving spirit."
