Leonard Cohen: Fans Have Asked For A Moratorium On 'Hallelujah'

Leonard Cohen has this week spoken out about the use and covers of his much beloved track ‘Hallelujah’, revealing that he has previously been asked for a moratorium, a block against the use of this track.

The track has previously been covered by the likes of Jeff Buckley, Bono, Willie Nelson, Rufus Wainwright and Alexandra Burke amongst countless features on television. From his 1984 album ‘Various Positions’ the track is one of the most powerful and moving tracks of all time, with over 100 known covers.

Speaking to The Guardian, Cohen said “There's been a couple of times when other people have said can we have a moratorium please on 'Hallelujah'? Must we have it at the end of every single drama and every single Idol? And once or twice I've felt maybe I should lend my voice to silencing it but on second thought no, I'm very happy that it's being sung”.

It has also been revealed that Cohen hopes to organise a tour and release another album despite his most recent offering ‘Old Times’ not being released until January 30. ‘Old Times’ is Cohen’s twelfth studio album and his first release in eight years.
