The Spinal Tap star Michael McKean has been hospitalised after being hit by a car.

McKean suffered multiple injuries on Wednesday (May 23), including a broken leg and cuts to the face. The actor was hit on his way to the theatre in New York.

The actor’s condition does seem to be improving as he was able to tweet, "Lucky man: best wife, great kids, awesome docs and nurses, priceless friends; a little overwhelmed by the sweet tweets", thanking his fans for support.

Currently starring in the play ‘The Best Man’, McKean is best known for playing the rock singer David St Hubbins in the classic 1984 spoof ‘This Is Spinal Tap’.

Close friend and producer, Jeffrey Richards has claimed the patient has joked with him on a visit: "We always tell each other to break a leg in this business. I never thought it would happen to me this way!"

"I have worked with Michael on three previous productions and he has never missed a performance, and I understand from his team that he has never missed a performance in his career. This is the kind of first we are reluctant to announce."
