While many are honoured by the idea of being inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, Deep Purple have revealed that they are 'kind of ambivalent' about it, adding that they might not even accept it.
The 'Smoke On The Water' rock heroes were nominated for entry to the shortlist in both 2013 and 2014, but failed to make the final selection. Now, bassist Roger Glover has told radio show Noize In The Attic that the band really aren't that bothered - as the recognition comes too late.
"We might just say, ‘You know, forget it. Too late,’" he said. "If they do [try to induct us], they’re at least 20 years too late as far as I’m concerned. They should have done it when Jon Lord was still alive when it probably would have had a bit more meaning."
When asked why they hadn't already been inducted, Glover said that he believed they weren't viewed as 'fashionable'. He added: "One of the jurors was heard to say, ‘You know, Deep Purple, they’re just one-hit wonders.’ How can you deal with that kind of Philistinism, you know?"
Many have championed the band to enter the hall, with Kiss' Gene Simmons calling it "a crime" that they weren't already inducted and Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich on record as saying: "I got two words to say, ‘Deep Purple.’ That’s all I have to say: Deep Purple. Seriously, people, ‘Deep Purple,’ two simple words in the English language.”
This year's Hall Of Fame saw Nirvana, Kiss, The E Street Band, Cat Stevens and more inducted.
