Modern Rocks Gallery in Austin, Texas is currently presenting a collection of outtakes from Nirvana’s Nevermind photoshoot, taken by Austin photographer Kirk Weddle. Many of these images appeared in the documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck, but prior to that, they were not available to the public.
The photoshoot, which took place on October 28, 1991, was intended to mimic the infamous Nevermind album cover featuring the naked baby in the water. However, when the tired band, who had just finished a string of concerts, arrived at the LA pool at 10am, it was unexpectedly cold and they weren't thrilled about jumping into a freezing swimming pool.
"I remember Kurt was like, 'Fuck! I have to get in the pool?'" Weddle recalled from the photoshoot. "He was not a water guy at all."
After Weddle convinced the band to jump into the water, he took approximately 200 photographs, which he had just kept “stacked in a closet, unorganized” until now.
