No one gets famous straight away - everyone has a long past of failed attempts to hit the big time. Click ahead to discover the bands of 10 now huge stars before they were famous.
Hurts: Those handsome chaps on the left are Adam Anderson and Theo Hutchcraft from Hurts, back in their previous band Daggers. They formed a band named Bureau after meeting when they refused to take part in a fight between friends outside 42s in Manchester. They soon after formed the eye-liner and leather wearing Daggers, achieving minor success with single Money/Magazine and recording early versions of Hurts songs. They split before returning as the duo we know and love today in 2009.
Muse: Matt Bellamy and Dominic Howard were in a school band with two names, both equally terrible - Carnage Mayhem and Gothic Plague. After the departure of various members, the band gradually metamorphosed into Muse.
Haim: Haim are in here twice because being in a band with your mum and dad called Rockinhaim is far, far less embarrassing than the other band Danielle and Este Haim were in. They were called The Valli Girls, had lyrics such as "I'm an individual and nothing's gonna stop me", and were absolutely terrible. That's Danielle on the left, and Este displaying early evidence of her bass face on the right.
Haim, again: Before they ditched their parents, Haim were members of a family band called Rockinhaim, with their mum on vocals and dad on drums. Everything about that is adorable. They played classic 1970s rock, and were actually quite good.
Paul Banks: Before joining Interpol in 1997, Banks made music under the name Julian Plenti. In 2009, he went back to that name to release his first solo album, but on subsequent solo efforts, he's just plain Paul Banks - probably because Julian Plenti sounds like a pornstar's name. Either way, it was all pretty good.
Alex Kapranos: Before he dropped his last name, Alex Huntley was a member of '90s jazz band The Karelia. According to the band's Wikipedia page, they sold "literally hundreds" of copies of their one and only album. After the success of Franz Ferdinand, copies became fairly precious commodities amongst hardcore Kapranos fans.
Lorde: At 17, Lorde is at the age when most people are still in the embarrassing high school band phase... so she did that bit early to make up for it. One of her high school bands, Extreme, competed in New Zealand's Intermediate Schools Battle Of The Bands in 2009, when Lorde was 12. They weren't great, but Lorde showcased those alien, awkward dance moves she's now perfected so wonderfully. Also, is it just us, or does she look about 10 years older than her bandmates?
Skrillex: Before he turned his hand to dubstep, Sonny John Moore was in a post-hardcore band called From First To Last. This is him screaming one note in the 'Note To Self' video. Amazingly, the band still exists, but Sonny wisely decided not to be a part of it.
Beyonce: In 1993, a 12 year old Beyonce appeared on talent show Star Search as part of the band Girls Tyme. The best thing about the footage that's appeared on YouTube is the disinterested elderly presenter who describes them as "the hip hop rapping Girls Tyme" as if he is speaking a foreign language. Beyonce's singing has improved since she was 12, we'll just say that.
Lauren Mayberry: Shortly before she gained critical and commercial success with Chvrches, Mayberry was in a band called Blue Sky Archives, whose main single were a really twee cover of Rage Against The Machine's 'Killing In The Name' and the indie-lite meets post-rock 'Cosplay The Hard Way' (which was pretty good - Youtube it). Everyone's got to start somewhere, right?
