Song Exploder: A recently popular podcast where host Hrishikesh Hirway invites artists to dissect their songs. Songs will be deconstructed and then have their component parts explained before the full song is played at the end of the podcast in full. The music terminology is accessible and it really gives you a new appreciation for the artists on the show; Song Exploder has already featured Will Butler, Garbage, Death Cab For Cutie and U2.
Distraction Pieces: A podcast hosted by rapper and spoken-wordsmith Scroobius Pip. The P-cast shares the name with Pip's second studio album and features an array of guests from the hip-hop world and beyond to discuss reality and the meaning of life. Notable guests include Russell Brand, Killer Mike, Rou Reynolds, Billy Bragg and Zane Lowe.
Turned Out A Punk: Hosted by Fucked Up's Damien Abraham, the M.O of the podcast is long-form conversations with people "all walks of life with one thing in common: they all grew up listening to punk." Since it began in November 2014, Abraham has spoken to members of Arcade Fire, Perfect Pussy, Alexisonfire, J Mascis and Martin Mills, the head of Beggars Music Group.
KEXP Song of the Day: You may recognise KEXP from the amazing in-studio sessions the station does but you may not know they do a daily podcast. Every weekday, the Seattle radio company will upload "exclusive in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent musicians". A couple of minutes every week day and you might stumble upon your favourite new artist.
St Vincent's Mixtape Delivery Service: Not a podcast format per se, but St Vincent's contribution to the Beats1 station is too great to miss. Every week Annie Clark picks a lucky individual, learns about them and personally curates them a mixtape to soundtrack whatever is going on in their lives.
Stones Throw Podcast: The greatest alternative hip-hop label on the planet with a wealth of material condensed into podcast form, what more could you want? The podcast contains mixes, interviews and unreleased tracks from the Stones Throw archives. The shows are pretty irregular but the little there is, is absolute gold.
WTF with Marc Maron: The most renowned talk podcast on the internet, comedian Marc Maron speaks to actors, writers and musicians candidly and about their careers. Check out interviews with Conor Oberst, St Vincent, David Byrne, Josh Homme and James Mercer.
Radio 1's Minimix: A 5 minute mix from the world's biggest DJs and producers. There's so much dance music out in the world, this podcast distills everything you need to hear into a bitesize chunk. Annie Mac has moved to Zane Lowe's slot but there's still a wealth of material to work through in the Minimix back catalogue.
NPR's Mic Check: Conversations with Hip-Hop legends and up-and-comers hosted by Frannie Kelley and Tribe Called Quest's Ali. Mic Check don't just talk to rappers but managers, producers and business people from the wider world of Hip-Hop; an essential podcast for any fan of hip-hop culture.
The Alligator Hour with Joshua Homme: The Queens of the Stone Age frontman has taken to Beats1 to woo us with sensual tunes and his dulcet tones. Just a few shows in, The Alligator Hour has already featured a guest spot from Arctics dreamboat, Alex Turner.
